Command & Control and Interoperability Products

Command and control (known in the military as ‘C2’), is about planning, directing and coordinating personnel, equipment, communications and procedures in order to accomplish a mission.
Interoperability is the ability of systems, units or forces to share information with other systems, units or forces and to use this exchanged information to operate effectively together. This is particularly important for coalition military operations, which often require information exchange between international organisations.

Structured Information Exchange

To achieve true interoperability the information exchanged between organisations should be both meaningful and understandable to humans and computer systems alike. To achieve this, information needs be exchanged in a structured, rather than a free-text, format.

Structured Documents

Organisations use structured documents to exchange information that is in a structured format. Using structured documents, for instance a Message Text Format (MTF), ensures that the information is unambiguous and enables computer systems to process information contained in the document.

Presentation forms are used by operators to open, prepare, edit and send structured documents. They display structured documents in a user friendly way and provide the user with help and assistance in completing the forms.

IRIS/DEF is a management tool used to define military message standards to ensure correct and complete exchange of information between military organisations and coalition partners.

There are many international standards for structured documents. Standards Management is about defining and controlling the structure, contents and rules associated with structured documents, so that all parties sending and receiving them will be able to understand and use the information contained in them.

IRIS Organisational Messaging

IRIS Organisational Messaging (IOM) is a cost effective solution for complete military message handling based on Microsoft Outlook and Exchange. IOM provides full support for military operational procedures and message exchange with coalition partners.

Most people today send messages using email. However, due to the nature of military operations, messages need to be sent between organisations and roles rather than individuals.
